Bechstein Vs Steinway. Which is the better piano.?

I love questions like this because so many people express a view that they honestly cannot make credibly.

Unless you have played 50 or so of each instrument, you cannot make a rational opinion.

del_icious_manager is correct! Every piano is different, it depends on what you want out of it!

I have played some Steinways that I would rather push over a mountain and into a gorge while there are some Steinways I wish I could take home! I played a Bechstein that I felt was one of the best instruments I have ever worked on, and played another that should be used as fire wood!

I have played on Baldwin's, Yamaha's, Kawai's... every conceivable concert instrument with some being amazing and some being trash. Every piano is different, you have to adjust to each instrument by listening carefully. Saying Bechstein is better than Steinway or "Bechstein for home, Steinway for concert" is ignorant!

And, without hearing the instruments, how can anyone blindly say which one is better? That is the thing I don't understand. People have opinions but based on nothing. You asked which one is better? I don't know... Horowitz doesn't know... Until I play on the two pianos you are speaking off, they are both great!

At major piano competitions they usually have 10 pianos for competitors to select. They would never on the application form say "Bechstein or Steinway" as a method of selecting an instrument.

One piano may be really good for chamber but doesn't work well as solo instrument. The piano may be really good for baroque but doesn't have a rich enough bass for romantic music. The action maybe to tight for classical but nice and heavy for some modern music.

Do I have a preference, yes, but when it comes to playing on the instrument, which ever one is available that allows me to do what I need to do is my favorite piano for the moment.
